Historic Context Statement

The Los Angeles Citywide Historic Context Statement is the framework for evaluating resources in the City of Los Angeles for national, state, and local designation. It covers a broad range of architectural, social, ethnic, and cultural topics from two centuries of Los Angeles history, starting in 1780 and ending around 1980.

The historic context statement:

• organizes the themes, trends, and patterns of history shared by properties into historic contexts, or categories;
• identifies and describes historic resources or property types that represent the contexts and themes;
• and provides specific standards to guide the evaluation of significance for national, state, and local designation based on the Resource Type (Historic Resource or Historic District) and its corresponding Context, Theme, and Property Type.

Los Angeles City Planning uses eligibility standards based on context, theme, and property type to evaluate the historic significance of resources, as established by the Multiple Property Documentation process created by the National Park Service.
